Sessional Assistant Professor in Children’s, Childhood & Youth Studies at York University

The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites applications for a one-year Sessional Assistant Professor position in Children’s, Childhood and Youth Studies (Diasporic and Global Youth Cultures) to commence July 1, 2017. Applicants must have a PhD in the humanities or a relevant discipline. The program seeks outstanding scholars whose research interests and projects address the lived experiences and cultures of children and/or youth from a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspective. Expression of Interest for Editor(s) of Papers: Explorations into Children’s Literature

The Australasian Children’s Literature Association for Research (ACLAR) invites applications for the editorship of Papers: Explorations into Children’s Literature to run for a period of four years from July 2016. Current editors, Professor Clare Bradford and Professor Kerry Mallan, intend to step down from this role at that point, but will work with the incoming editor(s) during a transition period.

Papers is Australia’s premier children’s literature journal. It publishes two issues each year, which include six or seven scholarly essays on all aspects of children’s literature and related media. It also publishes occasional review essays of recent books on children’s literature. An Editorial Board of international scholars provides support for the review of submissions to Papers. The opportunity to develop and expand the Editorial Board will be open to the new Editor(s).

Papers is a fully peer-reviewed journal. The journal is published at http://www.paperschildlit.com, and is currently updated using Dreamweaver by a volunteer. The incoming editorial team will need to provide their own technical manager and support, as the current website manager will be resigning the position with the change of editorial management. A detailed handover will be available for the incoming team.

Papers is supported by ACLAR, in the form of funding for webhosting, promotion through its website and conferences, and access to membership for seeking volunteers and reviewers.

Duties of Editor(s), Papers:

  • Appointing associate editors to help with the editorial work
  • Reviewing manuscripts; appointing referees; working with authors as they revise; editing; proofreading; and corresponding with authors and referees
  • Appointing and working with guest editors for special issues
  • Appointing and liaising with copy-editor/website manager
  • Reporting to ACLAR Board as required
  • Promoting Papers through indexing, publicity and outreach to scholars
  • Publishing two issues per year (July/Nov approximately)

Selection Criteria:

  • Experience as a scholar and editor, with a sound understanding of children’s and young adult literature scholarship
  • Capacity to work proactively in order to advance the journal’s interests
  • Capacity to set and maintain timelines and schedules
  • Experience in communicating with authors and referees
  • Capacity to provide suitable technical support for the layout, uploading, and publishing aspects of journal
  • It is also highly desirable that editors have institutional backing to take on this role; preferably time release to focus on the role, access to a university library, clerical and technical assistance.

Assistant Professor in Children’s Literature at Trinity College Dublin

The School of English (Trinity College Dublin) seek to appoint an Ussher Assistant Professor in Children’s Literature. The candidate will have a demonstrable track record of experience and expertise in archival research and working with collections. The successful candidate will join an established team serving exceptionally high demand for teaching at undergraduate level, a well-established full-time one year Masters course, and, eventually, extending the School’s capacity for supervision at PhD level. The candidate will work with Prof Pádraic Whyte on continuing to develop graduate research culture in the field generally. The candidate will dedicate one day per week to working directly with the Library, developing research opportunities in relation to the Pollard Collection of Children’s Books. Fellowships to study at Kent State University’s Reinberger Children’s Library Center

Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for two $1,500 research fellowships:

The Jacqueline M. Albers Guest Scholar in Children’s Literature Fellowship was endowed by SLIS alumna Jacqueline M. Albers to support a guest scholar who will study children’s literature using the collections in the Reinberger Children’s Library Center.

The Kenneth and Sylvia Marantz Fellowship for Picturebook Research, supported by Dr. Kenneth and Sylvia Marantz, encourages scholarly research on the study of picture books using the resources of the Marantz Picturebook Collection for the Study of Picturebook Art.

If awarded, funds could be used to coordinate a research visit with attending the Marantz Picturebook Research Symposium, July 24-26, 2016.

Each fellowship provides a stipend of up to $1,500 for outstanding scholars to spend approximately one week on site, researching picture books, posters or ephemera related to picturebooks in the Reinberger Children’s Library Center and Marantz Picturebook Collection at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science in Kent, Ohio, U.S.A. Stipends may be used toward travel, lodging, food and research-related supplies.

Mission of the Reinberger Children’s Library Center and the Marantz Picturebook Collection for the Study of Picturebook Art

From historical books for children to contemporary literature for young people, the Reinberger Children’s Library Center and the Marantz Picturebook Collection encompass diverse collections of youth literature that span geographic, cultural, physical, technological and temporal borders. The collections represent the best literature and related materials for young people. They also demonstrate the processes involved in producing, publishing and marketing such literature over time, from evolving means of production to differing constructions of childhood. In addition, the state-of-the-art Center provides opportunities to study connections between literacy, reading and digital technologies, which is valuable for practitioners as well as scholars.

The Center’s purpose is threefold: 1) to support and encourage scholarly research within its collections; 2) to provide professional training to students and practitioners; and 3) to engage in activities and outreach to the community and beyond. The Center’s collection is of interest to interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners from such fields as youth services librarianship, school library media, children’s literature, education, English, communication, media studies, design, and others interested in studying youth literature, publishing, young people and reading in both an historical and contemporary context.

The Reinberger and Marantz collections combine to form a research library collection of more than 30,000 books and related ephemera.

Following is a sampling of the types of studies which could be done using the collections:

  • The art of picture book illustration (media and techniques)
  • Themes and trends in children’s literature
  • Social construction of childhood through children’s literature
  • Social justice in children’s picturebooks
  • Studies of American Children’s Award winners

Criteria for Eligibility

  • Albers: Applicants will be evaluated based on their proven dedication to the study of children’s literature (not specifically picture books) and selection of a topic of study related to the Reinberger and Marantz collections.
  • Marantz: Applicants will be evaluated based on their proven dedication to the study of children’s picture books and selection of a topic of study related to the Reinberger and Marantz collections.
  • Preference will be given to topics likely to be published or otherwise disseminated.
  • Awards also will be based on applicants’ scholarly qualifications.
  • Applicants from diverse academic disciplines are welcome to apply, including but not limited to: youth services librarianship, school library media, children’s literature, art, education, English, communication, media studies, design, art education, illustration, publishing, and others interested in studying youth literature, young people and reading.
  • Applicants must hold at least a master’s degree.

Building on the strengths of its established, internationally recognized program, the Department seeks an outstanding scholar whose interests and projects address the lives or contexts of children and childhood using quantitative research methods. The disciplinary affiliation of an applicant is of less importance than the quality of his/her research and the demonstrated appreciation for multidisciplinary approaches to the study of children and childhood. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from those whose areas of interest may include but need not be limited to health, children’s or youth’s sexualities, media and communication, under-served populations and both national and international contexts. Established in 2007 as the first doctoral program in childhood studies in the USA, the department graduated its first Ph.D. students in May 2013. Childhood Studies offers a robust, multidisciplinary curriculum for BA, MA, and Ph.D. degrees. The department has hosted several major international conferences, sponsors an array of lectures and symposia, and annually welcomes visiting scholars from around the world. It enjoys an active faculty and graduate student body whose work often integrates scholarship with social and community engagement.
